Student finance from 2012

The Government has set out plans to reform the way it funds higher education and the financial support it offers students at higher education institutions and further education colleges. These changes will apply to students beginning courses in September 2012.

Under these arrangements, universities and colleges will be able to charge up to 6,000 per year in tuition fees. Some will be able to charge up to 9,000 per year. Those that do the latter will need to meet criteria showing clearly that all eligible students from any background will be considered for their courses where places are available.

The Government will introduce a new package of financial support for students in light of these changes. This package allows for:

  • no up front costs
  • loans for living costs
  • non-repayable grants.
