Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) is a structured approach to periodic assessment, enabling teachers to track pupils’ progress over a key stage or longer and to use diagnostic information about pupils’ strengths and weaknesses to improve teaching, learning and rates of pupils’ progress.

Using APP materials, English teachers can make more consistent level-related judgements in National Curriculum subjects. The APP approach improves the quality and reliability of teacher assessment and has proved to be robust, manageable and effective in practice.

This handbook is for subject leaders and their departments, to help them implement APP effectively in the classroom. Section 2 of the guide provides advice on putting APP into practice and Section 3 demonstrates how schools can implement APP. Section 4 shows the process required to make APP assessments.
