Statistical press notice: Critical care and delayed transfers of care statistics – March 2011 data

The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

Monthly situation reports on critical care beds, cancelled operations and delayed transfers of care.

The main findings for March 2011 were:

  • There were 3,679 adult critical care beds available with 3,065 occupied in March 2011. This compares to 3,677 available and 3,033 occupied in February 2011.
  • The number of urgent operations cancelled was 237 in March 2011. This compares with 248 urgent operations cancelled in February 2011.
  • The number of delayed transfers of care for March 2011 is 4,174 and the total number of delayed days in the month was 122,392.  This compares with 4,441 delayed transfers and 111,604 delayed days in February 2011
  • Of those 4,174, 2,296 were acute patients and of the delayed days 65,976 were acute.
