Doing business with us – procurement

Defra purchases a wide range of goods and services each year and is keen make it straightforward for prospective and existing suppliers to do business with us. This means helping suppliers to understand our policies and practices, and to help achieve our two main objectives in purchasing:

  • Value for money
  • Sustainability

Defra has produced: “Selling to Defra: a guide for suppliers”, aimed at prospective, new and established suppliers. For new suppliers especially, this is a really useful resource.

Sustainability

Defra is committed to sustainable procurement. This means

  • only purchasing goods and services which are really needed and
  • buying items whose production, use and disposal minimise negative impacts on the environment and society.

We are keen for SMEs and minority-owned businesses to find it as straightforward as possible to tender for contracts

Tendering for contracts

You can find information on contracts and frameworks at the following online portals

  • Defra’s e-tendering site – you can browse tendering opportunities and manage your tender activity (registration is required).
  • CompeteFor – a free online marketplace, offering contract opportunities from by Defra and other major public and private sector buying organisations. After completing their business profiles suppliers can manually search for opportunities, track and save contract applications and search for suitable partners.
  • Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) – publishes adverts and notices for tenders and contracts.
  • Supply2.gov.uk – is designed to give companies access to lower-value public sector contracts, typically worth less than £100,000.

Defra arranges quarterly supplier workshops and occasional special events. The next supplier forum takes place in London on 12 January 2011.
