About this site

We are creating a new Defra website reflecting the latest government policies and priorities.

This website (at ww2.defra.gov.uk for the time being) – using our former visual design and layout – focuses on providing an overview on the department’s policies and current work, with updated headline information covering all our main business areas, and directing people where appropriate to more detailed information elsewhere (eg Directgov or Business Link) or to key documents, legislation and guidance.

We’re continuing to expand the information available here, aiming to ensure that it meets the needs of our customers, that it remains concise and easy-to-understand, and that we make the most popular or important information easy to find.

Within the next few months we’ll move the website back to its “proper” www.defra.gov.uk address – and the information on the “old” Defra website will then move to an archive address. In the meantime we continue, where necessary, to make factual updates to information there. Our search function searches across both the “new” and “old” sites.

We regret any inconvenience caused by these necessary changes to improve our website.

We have taken the opportunity to add some new features, including a Twitter feed, and links to our pages on You Tube and Flickr. You can also subscribe to our news updates using an RSS feed.

For the technically minded, in the interests of speed and cost-effectiveness we are building the new site using open source WordPress software.
