What has changed on the Planning Portal?

October 2010 website update

We have updated our website to provide you with a better user experience.

You can now customise your Planning Portal home page to give you easier access to the content, tools or services you use the most.

Why does the front page look so different?

The content is now organised in individual Portal Apps - small windows containing information and data. Examples of Portal Apps that can be added to your home page include:

  • Your Applications: this will allow you to view, update or submit your applications online
  • Find your LPA: enter a location or post code to find contact information for a Local Planning Authority
  • News Feeds: clicking the down arrow icon next to a specific news feed (for example, the Communities news feed) will display recent RSS feeds
  • Common Projects: quick links to our guidance on common household and business projects

You can add Portal Apps to your home page by logging on and clicking the ‘Add homepage content’ button under the main navigation menu.

Planning applications

How do I access my applications?

Your applications will still be in your account and your user name and password have not changed. You can log in by clicking ‘Login’ at the top right of the page.

If you are logged in, you can access your applications through the ‘Your applications’ Portal App (you may have to add this to your homepage if it isn’t there) or through the Planning home page.

Registration and Login

I’m already registered with the Planning Portal - why do I need to reconfirm my details?

Providing additional details lets us better understand who is using the service so we can improve the website and also the way we communicate with you.

By telling us about your interest in the Portal we can give you a set of Portal Apps that suits you. However, you can reorganise your homepage in any way you choose, whatever suits you.

Can I use the website without re-registering?

Yes, but only if you do not need to log in to the Planning Portal. You don’t need to be logged in to access the guidance, policy or news on the website.

However, you will need to be logged in to create and submit planning applications and to access existing applications.

You will also need to be logged in if you want to personalise your homepage content.

Where are the terms and conditions explaining what this information will be used for?

The terms and conditions for our service are available from the link at the bottom of the registration page.

I've forgotten my password

If you have forgotten your password you can use our Forgotten Password service to reset it.

Simply click on the 'Login' link at the top right of the screen, select the option 'I am an existing user but have forgotten my password' and enter your user name and the email address you are registered with.

Your password will be automatically reset and sent to you by email. The reset password will be a series of letters and numbers that are case sensitive, therefore we strongly recommended that when you first log in, you cut and paste your password into the password field.

Once you are logged in, click on 'Edit Details' in the top right of the screen and you'll be able to change your password to something more memorable.

I've forgotten my user name

If you have forgotten your user name you can easily retrieve it.

Simply click on the 'Login' link at the top right of the screen, select the option 'I am an existing user but have forgotten my user name' and enter the email address you originally registered with.

Your username will be sent to you by email.

General questions

Why are there no improvements to the planning application service?

We haven’t made any major changes to the planning application service other than to extend the same look and feel to the service.

However, we are planning to make significant improvements to the online application service in the near future. These will aim to make the service simpler and quicker to use (for example by shortening the forms and re-using previously supplied information).

The site update in October 2010 followed an update to our infrastructure in October 2009. The improvements to the application service will be the third and final stage of our project to improve the service we deliver to our customers.

You can follow the progress of the work to improve the online application service on the blog of the Planning Portal's director Chris Kendall.

I have further queries which are not answered here. Where I can find further information?
