Primary mathematics support for subject knowledge: Unit 1: Teaching division in Years 1, 2 and 3

Introduction

This study unit is for an individual teacher or a group of primary teachers who are developing their teaching of mathematics. It is the first of three units on the teaching of division and has a related task to work on afterwards.

The purpose of this unit is to:

  • consider different interpretations of division
  • review the use of models, images and language in the teaching of division
  • consider how children can be helped to learn division facts and review progression in division up to the end of Year 3.

The follow-up task is some background reading to help consolidate the ideas discussed in the unit.

Study time

About 75 minutes, plus time for the follow-up task.

Resources

Each teacher will need:

  • a notepad
  • a copy of the Primary Framework for mathematics learning objectives
  • the follow-up reading for this unit, Teaching division in Years 1, 2 and 3: background information.

The individual teacher or group leader will need:

  • the slide presentation Unit 1: Teaching division in Years 1, 2 and 3, viewed as a slide show
  • for a larger group, a data projector and screen, and a whiteboard or flipchart
  • a print out of the study notes.
