Ashley Vale Self Build Development

An impressive self-build project of 20 plots built over a former scaffold yard. It has a distinct character with a mix of scales, architectural styles and materials, and pleasant public spaces. Bounded by railway lines, allotments and a nature reserve, for a city site it has a rural feel.

Ashley Vale provides 37 homes arranged around the perimeter of the site and along an internal road. There is also affordable business space.

The development had its beginnings in the local community’s response to redevelopment proposals for the site. The design approach adopted was unusual: individual self-expression was a key principle underpinning the whole scheme, along with an ambition for sustainability. Most houses have photo-voltaic panels and there is a biomass boiler for the block of flats and business units, together with rainwater harvesting and green roofs. Each house has its own garden and there is also a central communal garden.
