Broadway Community Garden

The Broadway Community Garden, designed with and for local people, celebrates the culture of the travelling community that lives in the area.

The community garden was designed by muf architecture/art for Broadway Residents and Tenants Association (BRATS) in Tilbury, Essex. They discovered that a hidden travellers’ culture existed in the area so developed a series of events based on the community’s relationship with horses.

The residents’ opinions and suggestions were taken on board, and once the garden was complete the community took ownership of the area.

Muf created an exciting garden with innovative elements, including rubble and earth-filled cages, planted with grasses and wild flowers, separating key spaces; a special horse area; a large gathering space used for football; and playing areas for young and older children.
