Millbay, Plymouth

Cargo is an imaginative scheme for 134 homes that works cleverly with its surroundings in a challenging locality. The mix of business space with residential use will support regeneration of the area.

A mixed-use high-density development, Cargo is one of the first phases of a wider masterplan for 1,200 homes which will regenerate an area of Plymouth’s waterfront. It sets an important benchmark for the future regeneration.

The client’s brief was for a contemporary scheme responding to the waterfront. The design approach is bold and considered as it defines the pattern of buildings around the site: some at the scale of warehouses, others at the scale of residential terraces. All buildings are visually interesting, and every elevation has an active interaction with the street.

The opportunities of the site have been maximised by making the most of views and by the orientation of the buildings. Each house or apartment has a balcony with a sunny outlook. An internal courtyard garden is shared by those who live and work there.

The design is economic, achieving a good spatial amenity and quality of finish within a limited budget.
