Productive Leader

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the aims of The Productive Leader programme?

  • The Productive Leader aims to reduce waste and variation in personal work processes to free up time for individuals and teams to focus on more value adding activities such as strategic planning, thinking and mentoring.
  • It is a comprehensive, facilitated programme involving entire teams, planned and delivered in-house by a facilitator and a project manager identified from within the organisation itself.

Who is The Productive Leader aimed at and what is the process the team follows to go through the programme?

  • The recommended approach to The Productive Leader is to start with the senior leadership team (chief executive, directors and their PAs).  However the programme can also be adapted to your organisational context, culture and suit the needs of other staff groups.  Please contact us if you would like to discuss how The Productive Leader can benefit your team or organisation.
  • As a whole team, the group attends a series of five facilitated session over a period of 8-20 weeks.
  • These sessions are organised internally by their nominated facilitator using The Productive Leader modules and online tools to deliver each session.

What is the structure of the programme?

  • The programme is made up of five facilitated modules which involve the entire  team. At the end of each session, the team makes a series of commitments towards improvements that can be made and cascaded throughout the organisation.
  • The Productive Leader is supported by a series of self-development modules which participants undertake in their own time, before the during the programme.   Typically it takes a team 8 to 20 weeks to complete the programme.
  • Participants are also required to undertake some pre-work to gather baseline and activity data, and complete a personal effectiveness questionnaire.  Participants are also provided with the opportunity to complete the Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire.

How do I identify a project manager and facilitator?

  • You need to ensure that the people you select to plan and faciliate the programme have both the capability and capacity.

  • The project manager will need to be highly credible and influential within the senior leadership team.  This role is not just about planning but being to make the links between the Productive Leader and existing organisational initiatives and priorities.  Having a background in organisational development or human resources is an advantage.

  • The facilitator will be responsible for delivering the facilitated sessions.  People most successful in this role are already experienced in facilitating senior groups and adapting materials for local need.

For further details and guidance on both roles, please see the Executive Leader Guide page 22-24 or go to Register Your Facilitator/PM

Can the same person be a project manager and a facilitator?

  • In some cases they may be the same person although each role demands specific skills and experience.  In this case they may benefit from identifying "champions" in the organisation who can support them and as as ambassadors.
  • We have found that the programme is most successful where an organisation benefits from both a project manager and a facilitator.
  • To be a successful project manager or facilitator requires a significant time investment.  Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.
  • For details of both roles, please see Register Your Facilitator/PM.

What is the new Executive Leader Guide?

  • The Executive Leader Guide was updated in May 2010 and is now available to order or download.  It is not part of the Productive Leader box set, but provides a valuable resource for any leader wanting to learn more about how to improve quality, drive efficiency and spread best practice throughout the organisation.
  • In this guide discover how to deliver the programme for maximum benefit, what resources (time and expertise) are needed, the commitment leaders and staff need to make to implement the programme successfully and the simple steps you can take to start the programme.
  • This publication is available free of charge - 5 copies per organisation.

Why do you need an NHS England email address to access the content on your site?

  • Because the NHS Institute products and programmes are only freely available to the NHS in England, this is our way of verifying that users are from that audience.
  • If you are having problems logging on to our website, please get in touch using the contact us page.

How do I place an order for a Productive Leader box set?
Rather than ordering individual box sets, you need to place an order for the team who are going to participate in the programme.

  • You will need to have approval by your executive sponsor before you can request them on the "register now" page. This is because the programme is initially aimed at executive teams so only a limited number of box sets can be sent to each NHS organisation.
  • Once an order has been placed, subsequent orders cannot be made online, so please contact us.
  • Upon registering both the person placing the box set order and the executive sponsor will receive a confirmation email.
