Land Use Statistics

Public Sector Information Holder: DEFRA

Information Asset: UK Land Use Statistics

The problem

There does not seem to be a full and clear account of the UK's land use statistics under the ten government designated groups. I'm currently doing some research for my Diploma in Countryside Management and would be most grateful if this could be made readily available.

Kind Regards

Olly Cant

My ideal solution

Just simply a page which can be easily "Googled" showing the percentage of UK land use broken down into the ten main groups (Residential, Transport & Utilities, Industry & Commerce, Community Services, Vacant, Minerals & Waste, Defence, Agriculture, Forestry & Open Land & Water and Outdoor Recreation). Ideally I would like to see the same data from the last 10 years (or further back if possible!)

What I would do

I would use the data to study how UK land use has changed which would form the basis of my assignment looking at the land use changes over time and their implications for future conservation sites.

Public Sector Information Holder: Asylum and Immigration Tribunal

Information Asset: Asylum Appeal Grants and Refusals by Immigration Judge 2009

The problem

I would like to be able to review the information detailing which Immigration Judges in the Liverpool and Manchester Tribunals are granting and refusing asylum appeals.

My ideal solution

A spreadsheet detailing the numbers of allowed and refused appeals in the Liverpool and Manchester Tribunals by Immigration Judge for 2009

What I would do

The information would be reviewed to ensure that the appeal results for our organisation are in line with the general trends.

Information Asset: Spending Challenge

The problem

The Treasury have now taken down the Spending Challenge website which is a shame. It has some really interesting data on issues I am looking in to as Vice-Chairman of Bucks IoD. Good example is research into views about HS2 - the proposed new high speed link to Birmingham.

My ideal solution

The data from the site would be great. Particularly if it came with the number of votes and scores e.g.

Idea Votes Rating
HS2 should be stopped 883 4.8

What I would do

Use it to research how the public who commented are feeling about the ideas that were raised.

Public Sector Information Holder: DfES

Information Asset: A list of UK schools

The problem

I am trying to get creative and performing arts workshop information out to UK schools but have been held up by a couple of sites that are ineffective. The 1st one, " show us a better way", has a link on it (to the OPSI.gov site) which doesn't work! I have spent hours and hours looking as I need a version that has the address (for mailing) and email addresses too.

I have also applied for a PSI license so i can obtain this but there is not anywhere for me to use the license number.

My ideal solution

A mailing list with emails please in excel format easily obtainable.

What I would do

As mentioned above

What I would do

for use in an article on research about infants and young children in foster care

Details of Patents

Public Sector Information Holder: UK Intellectual Property Office

Information Asset: Patents - Bibliographic, full text, images

The problem

The UK Intellectual Property Office makes available individual patents through their web site and search engines. They have recently implemented the capability to download some data in batches in a very badly structured XML format.

The data should be freely available for all to download and make use of as they see fit. This requires a copy of the complete UK patent database, in a well-accepted XML format, such as ST36.

My ideal solution

Separate datasets for bibliographic-only and full-text, freely downloadable in XML ST.36 format. This format is well-understood by the patent community, is maintained by WIPO, and used by EPO. Another freely available dataset with all patent PDFs.

The downloadable database should include the fullback file to at least 1990, preferably earlier. Frontfile data should be published weekly for all three datasets.

Ancillary datasets, such as legal events, reclassifications, etc. should also be made available and downloadable in bulk.

What I would do

I would include UK patents (which are separate from EP patents) in an existing commercial application. This system already includes data from US, EP, and WO. The US now makes all this data freely available, and downloadable via Google.

The problem

Old maps are not published anymore and are out of copyright anyway.

Digital release of all out of copyright maps

What I would do

I and many others would use the maps to study social history and the development of our villages and towns over many decades.

Information Asset: EPC Register

The problem

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/opensecrets/2009/08/comparing_the_energy_efficiency_of_public_buildings.html

The August 2009 dataset was released under FOI, but did not contain energy consumption data - only CO2 emissions. It was also a static snapshot of the database at that time.

My ideal solution

kWh of gas and electricity consumption at address-level for all public buildings in the EPC register - regularly updated.

What I would do

Use it to create a map of heat demand from public buildings, to support the development of low carbon heating systems.

Census Microdata

Public Sector Information Holder: ONS

Information Asset: Census Microdata

The problem

The census is probably the richest source of social data available in the UK, providing a huge range of information on all kind of subjects at an individual level.

This data is usually released in aggregate form, across regions or nationally which whilst useful, severely restricts the potential for further analysis by practitioners.

For reasons of confidentiality access to the raw data is restricted to government departments and academic bodies. Whilst the need to protect confidentiality is understandable. If this data could be released at a micro level removing disclosive information it would be immensely valuable for all kinds of work.

My ideal solution

Micro - level access to census data is already granted to academic institutions via http://www.census.ac.uk.

I would like to see data made accessible to everyone.

What I would do

I would use the information in econometric models to investigate the importance of various factors on levels of unemployment in to provide advice and evidence for government policy and projects.

Information Asset: Information about the awarding of contracts for London 2012

The problem

There is no data regarding the Olympics on this site.

My ideal solution

A spreadsheet detailing company names, locations and the size of contracts awarded to them for the Olympic Games in 2010.

What I would do

There was a lot of talk of the Olympics benefiting the whole country. I would like to see if this is the case of if most of the contracts were awarded to companies in the south east. I would like to create a visualisation of this information.
