Public Sector Information Holder: Met Office

Information Asset: Rainfall radar

The problem

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/

"These radar images are covered by Crown copyright and remain the property of the Met Office. Please do not use them on other sites"

The rainfall radar data and images would make a valuable resource for applications in the meteorology space.

The natural compliment for this data would be the historic observation data too: www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/observations/

My ideal solution

The data (observations and radar images) to be:

  1. Freely licensed for input to application development
  2. Easily accessible on the internet for download, accessible by date and by location
  3. Documented via a wiki as to describe the data, it's limitations, quirks etc.

What I would do

I would be able to work on an ultra-short-term, ulrta-local app to guesstimate rainfall. E.g., tweets to the effect of "this rain? don't worry, it'll probably be gone in 30 minutes" or "we've got a 2 hour window of dry, then it's rain for as long as we can see".

The problem

The data.gov.uk site is great, though compared to data.gov and other countries currently rather thin on geographical (GIS) data.

Public Sector Information Holder: The Stationery Office

Information Asset: Acts of the UK Parliament, original full text

The problem

Pre-1988 availability of pdf full texts of Acts at http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts is patchy. The following key Acts which would be valuable to transport historians are omitted: Railways Regulation Act 1844; Act for Constituting Commissioners for Railways 1846; Railway Construction Facilities Act 1864; Regulation of Railways Act cap.76 1873; Cheap Trains Act 1883; Regulation of Railways Act 1893; Light Railways Act 1901; Transport Act 1947

My ideal solution

For at least the above-listed Acts to have pdf full text included in http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts

What I would do

This information would be publicised by the Railway & Canal Historical Society, including a link from its website, and notified to kindred organisations

Public Sector Information Holder: Office for Local Government

Information Asset: Simple list of all Local Authorities (with Contact Details), along with the Postal Areas they cover.

The problem

Would make statistical reporting so much easier

My ideal solution

A list of the local authorities in the country with addresses, with regional / country breakdown, and the first part of the postcode that the authority covers.

What I would do

Statistical matching with information like crime / health data.

Would be useful to give a snapshot view of a single authority boundaries.
