Public Sector Information Holder: Office for National Statistics

Information Asset: Number of cars per household by number of rooms in the property

The Problem

I am unable to find a data set that breaks down into the exact figures I need. This is to form part of a regional parkng strategy. Dorset county council have this information for their area.

My ideal solution

I would like a dataset that shows the number of cars per household broken down into the number of cars per one room/2room/3room etc. I need this data for the whole of Somerset by LSOA. I urgently need information for South Somerset by LSOA

What would I do

This data will be fed into a methodology designed by Dorset County Council to work out the number of car parking spaces required for new developments. This will form part of the Somerset County Councils Regional Parking Strategy which is one of the Modal Strategies in our LTP

Public Sector Information Holder:NHI

Information Asset: Health Insurance Claims - Transactions Data

The Problem

I want to research abuse and fraud in Health Care claims, which burden the Health Care system.

I need two sample data sets - one for training and one for validation. The identity of the patients, providers, physicians, medication, devices and suppliers can be masked and mapped to original data by NHI after submission of results of research.

My ideal solution

To check irregularities in claims; to peg fraud and abuse of claims at 2% of public expenditure on health care.

What would I do

I want to use data mining and analytics to discover patterns, associations, sequence detection, etc., to build suitable models for segmentation of patients/providers, CART, Neural Networks tool, etc., that can aid informed decisions and policy-making.

Public Sector Information Holder: Sport England

Information Asset: Active Places

The problem

The ActivePlaces website (and ActivePlaces power) has a great database of sports facilities in England. However, the website is dated and really lets it down. There is the ability to download the data (through ActivePlaces power), but access is only allowed for Government Departments, Governing bodies of sports, Lottery Distributors and other government organisations.

My ideal solution

I'd like to see the data released as a CSV, or, even better, as linked data

What I would do

Build a more up to date and user friendly front end for ActivePlaces with find my nearest functionality etc.

Information Asset: IVA completion failure tables

The problem

The age of the failed IVA's in the last 3 years to update my earlier research on causes of failure and to look at whether the IVA protocol has had any effect on the failure rates which appear to have fallen drastically.

My ideal solution

An analysis of the failed IVA's by date of appointment, also if possible by age and sex of debtor and if the IVA was subject to the protocol.

What I would do

I plan to update my earlier research and see if there are any changes in the findings.

Public Sector Information Holder: DEFRA

Information Asset: UK Land Use Statistics

The problem

There does not seem to be a full and clear account of the UK's land use statistics under the ten government designated groups. I'm currently doing some research for my Diploma in Countryside Management and would be most grateful if this could be made readily available.

Kind Regards

Olly Cant

My ideal solution

Just simply a page which can be easily "Googled" showing the percentage of UK land use broken down into the ten main groups (Residential, Transport & Utilities, Industry & Commerce, Community Services, Vacant, Minerals & Waste, Defence, Agriculture, Forestry & Open Land & Water and Outdoor Recreation). Ideally I would like to see the same data from the last 10 years (or further back if possible!)

What I would do

I would use the data to study how UK land use has changed which would form the basis of my assignment looking at the land use changes over time and their implications for future conservation sites.

Public Sector Information Holder: Asylum and Immigration Tribunal

Information Asset: Asylum Appeal Grants and Refusals by Immigration Judge 2009

The problem

I would like to be able to review the information detailing which Immigration Judges in the Liverpool and Manchester Tribunals are granting and refusing asylum appeals.

My ideal solution

A spreadsheet detailing the numbers of allowed and refused appeals in the Liverpool and Manchester Tribunals by Immigration Judge for 2009

What I would do

The information would be reviewed to ensure that the appeal results for our organisation are in line with the general trends.

Information Asset: Spending Challenge

The problem

The Treasury have now taken down the Spending Challenge website which is a shame. It has some really interesting data on issues I am looking in to as Vice-Chairman of Bucks IoD. Good example is research into views about HS2 - the proposed new high speed link to Birmingham.

My ideal solution

The data from the site would be great. Particularly if it came with the number of votes and scores e.g.

Idea Votes Rating
HS2 should be stopped 883 4.8

What I would do

Use it to research how the public who commented are feeling about the ideas that were raised.

Public Sector Information Holder: DfES

Information Asset: A list of UK schools

The problem

I am trying to get creative and performing arts workshop information out to UK schools but have been held up by a couple of sites that are ineffective. The 1st one, " show us a better way", has a link on it (to the OPSI.gov site) which doesn't work! I have spent hours and hours looking as I need a version that has the address (for mailing) and email addresses too.

I have also applied for a PSI license so i can obtain this but there is not anywhere for me to use the license number.

My ideal solution

A mailing list with emails please in excel format easily obtainable.

What I would do

As mentioned above

My ideal solution

Please let me know if this data is still collected and if so where to find it

What I would do

for use in an article on research about infants and young children in foster care
