Coordinate the surgical pathway

Optimising use of theatre, surgical and anaesthetic time will maximise throughput without compromising patient safety.  Approaches that can help include:

  • making sure that all theatre lists start on time and that there is no delay between cases
  • making sure that the length of theatre session is right for the case mix - we know for example that all-day lists are more efficient
  • ensuring that the allocation of dedicated trauma sessions is right for the number of cases requiring surgery each day

OUTCOME
CHANGE
Better theatre utilisation Increase theatre utilisation rate in the Input Manager.  Go to ‘operation’ step and change hours of coverage, shorten operation duration and/or increase capacity to reflect better utilisation and move to all day lists.

Follow up thereafter

Reduce unnecessary post-operative outpatient attendances.  Some patients will need a follow up appointment - others will not. A nurse or physiotherapy practitioner can see straightforward patients, freeing up consultant time. Also consider telephone follow up for patients who have for example undergone joint replacement surgery
