Minimising cancellations

Pre-operative assessment will help but more can be done:

  • use one person to co-ordinate admissions - admissions staff can liaise with theatres, wards and supplies unit to ensure that people and equipment are available on the day. This role is also important for the trauma workload as it means trauma patients can be operated upon quickly and so in the long run free up beds for elective patients
  • it is imperative to plan all annual leave well in advance

OUTCOME
CHANGE
Better co-ordination of admissions Consider the impact on length of stay, bed availability, theatre availability.  Model by introducing new step called 'Admisison Co-ordination'.  This step has a resource attached to it but no duration.  Route a percentage of admissions from 0-100% through this step and increase bed and theatre capacity, reduce length of stay.
