Online collaborative spaces (social networking)

Description

These are online tools which allow the user to create their own social networks. The structure of these can vary depending on the application but they all enable users to produce a social network around a particular theme or issue.

  • Every member of the network can blog through a comment wall, post events, have discussion forums.
  • Spaces often look like an individual website
  • Networks are password protected closed groups, so they may be suitable for more sensitive subjects

Risks and disadvantages

  • Can incur costs as the social network grows
  • Developing active collaboration may require initial, and ongoing, intervention from a co-ordinator to prompt members to join discussions, post documents etc.
