Profiles of the Chair, Executive Directors and Non-executive Directors of the NHS Institute are summarised below. 

Yve BucklandDame Yve Buckland - Chair of the board

Dame Yve Buckland was appointed Chair of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement from its inception on 1 July 2005.  Prior to this appointment she was Chair of the Health Development Agency (DoH 2000-2005) following her Chairmanship at the Health Education Authority since 1997.  Yve was, until 2005, Vice-Chair of the South Warwickshire Primary Care Trust and was Programme Director of the University of Warwick Health Service Partnership at the Institute of Governance and Public Management at the Warwick Business School.

Yve is an Honorary Member of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Governance and Public Management (IGPM), Warwick Business School, University of Warwick and also a Fellow of the RSA. She was awarded the DBE in HM Birthday Honours List June 2003 for services to Public Health. Yve is also currently Chair of the National Consumer Council for Water. 

Non-executive Directors

Carol BlackProfessor Dame Carol Black - Non-executive Director

Dame Carol is the National Director for Health and Work, Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Chair of the Nuffield Trust. She joined the Board as a Non-Executive Director for a four year term on 15 February 2006 and was reappointed for a further four year terms in February 2010. She acts as an ambassador with key medical groups on behalf of the NHS Institute.


Tony ButterworthProfessor Tony Butterworth CBE - Non-executive Director

Director of the Centre for Clinical and Academic Workforce Innovation, University of Lincoln, Professor Butterworth is a registered general and mental health nurse with extensive executive experience in the NHS and higher education. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, the Academy of Medical Sciences and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a Senior Policy Advisor to NHS Employers. Prior to his current appointment, Professor Butterworth was Chief Executive of Trent Workforce Development Confederation. 



Mike DeeganMike Deegan CBE - Non-executive Director

Mike is Chief Executive of Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is currently a member of the National Leadership Network and chairs its programme of work on local hospitals. Throughout 2003/04 he chaired the Modernisation Agency Steering Group on behalf of the National Modernisation Board. Prior to his current appointment, he was Chief Executive of North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust and led the merger of Warrington and Halton Hospitals. 
 


Mike LanderMike Lander - Non-executive Director

Mike is an accomplished Chairman, CEO and business owner (£10-20m turnover and up to 120 FTEs).  He has a unique breadth of experience that includes new business start-ups, acquisitions, business transformation, restructuring and turn-around programmes.  Mike has a consulting and business transformation background which includes KPMG Consulting and Barclays Bank and has deep experience in both banking and education sectors with a particular emphasis on special education needs (SEN).


Joe Liddane Joe Liddane - Non-executive Director

Joe Liddane, a trained chartered accountant, brings over 30 years experience in financial advisory and management consultancy roles to the post and is currently Managing Director of Setanta Performance, a performance improvement company.  He also has experience of the NHS in his role as Chair of the Whittington Hospital Trust.  Joe is Chair of the NHS Institute's Audit and Risk Management Committee.


Noorzaman RashidNoorzaman Rashid - Non-executive Director

Noorzaman Rashid joined the NHS Institute Board as a Non-executive Director on 1st October 2007 for a four-year period. He works for Harvey Nash, a global professional services, IT and Recruitment business where he leads the Government, public sector and leadership services practices.

Noorzaman brings significant board level experience to the NHS Institute from across the public and private sectors. He has a deep understanding of the talent issues market and organisational transformation. His international consulting experience includes work in Russia, South Africa and Japan. Noorzaman is also a board member of the University of Middlesex, The British Edutrust Foundation and is Chair of the Public Services Management Network.

He has a background in government, having worked for the Local Government between 1988 and 1998, for the City of Bradford Council and Coventry City Council.  Noorzaman is Chair of the NHS Institute Worldwide shadow board.  
Executive Directors

 

Bernard CrumpProfessor Bernard Crump - Chief Executive Officer

Bernard Crump qualified in medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1980. He practised as a physician and carried out clinical research in the Midlands and the South East before training in Public Health Medicine. He became Director of Public Health in South Birmingham Health Authority in 1990. He subsequently became Director of Public Health and Deputy Chief Executive of Leicestershire Health Authority and Chief Executive of the Shropshire and Staffordshire Strategic Health Authority from 2001 – 2005, prior to joining the NHS Institute as Chief Executive. 
 


Rod Anthony 2010.jpgRod Anthony - Acting Director of Corporate Services and Finance

Rod qualified as a chartered accountant in 1985 and following this worked for Reuters Plc and held a number of senior financial roles at Glaxo Pharmaceuticals UK Ltd.  During his time at Glaxo, Rod spend 12 months on secondment to NW Thames Regional Health Authority, working on the roll out of GP fundholding.

In 1995, Rod joined the Forensic Science Service (FSS) as Finance Director and led its transition to a government owned company.

Rod first worked with the NHS Institute in August 2007, setting up its international business and establishing a series of commercial pilots.  He became Acting Director of Finance in August 2008 and took over responsibility for Corporate Services in November 2009.  Rod is also Non-executive Director and Deputy Chair at Solihull Care Trust.


Helen BevanDr Helen Bevan OBE - Chief of Service Transformation

Over the past 15 years Helen has led change initiatives at local and national level which have created improvements for millions of patients.  Her current role is to keep NHS improvement knowledge fresh, relevant, impactful at the leading edge. She holds a first degree in social science, an MBA and a doctorate from Henley Management College.
