Single beam echo sounder

Single beam echosounders use one emitting and receiving “transducer”, which releases a series of energy pulses in the form of sound waves, “ensonifying” (filling with sound) a small area underneath the boat.  The time lag between the sound being emitted and its returning echo is used to calculate water depth beneath the boat.
