The future of cheques

July 2010

In December last year the Payments Council set a target date of 31 October 2018 to close the central cheque clearing, a move that would effectively see an end to cheques. The final decision on the future of cheques is due to be made in 2016.

In the meantine the Payments Council is holding an extensive consultation for businesses, including charities. We continue to attend meetings of their charity and voluntary sector liaison group and they are also inviting charities to give their thoughts on how the abolition of cheques will affect them. You can respond to the consultation by filling in the form on their website. The Payments Council will also be holding a series of national workshops to help them better understand users' views.

Further details are in the attached invitation (PDF 3.24mb).
