ICT and the national curriculum aims

ICT has a distinctive contribution to make to the aims of the national curriculum as a whole. The ICT programme of study provides opportunities to plan sequences of work, learning outcomes and teaching approaches that develop:

Successful learners

The relevance of ICT to pupils’ lives, personal experiences and futures gives them motivation to succeed in the subject and makes learning enjoyable for them. ICT contributes to developing successful learners by providing powerful tools for developing creativity, initiative and independent thinking. ICT helps pupils to follow enquiries and solve problems, and enhances their skills in logical reasoning, questioning, analysis and research.

ICT develops pupils’ independent learning skills and their confidence, and provides a variety of ways for them to present and share their knowledge and ideas. The subject supports communication and collaborative working with others in the school, in the local community, and across the globe. Through exploring and developing ideas and assessing work critically, pupils learn to reflect on and analyse their own and others’ work and the world around them.

Confident individuals

The programme of study encourages pupils to use ICT to initiate activities and to become increasingly independent, developing pupils’ self-esteem and confidence. ICT enables pupils to try out ideas, seek innovative alternatives, take risks with their thinking and make new connections without fear of failure. The programme of study encourages responsible and safe use of digital communications.

ICT enables pupils to explore different ways to present and communicate their ideas effectively to a range of audiences. The wealth of information available via the internet about the natural world, human achievements and a wide range of people, communities and cultures can excite and inspire pupils.

Responsible citizens

ICT capability is fundamental to full participation in and engagement with modern society. Information is a valuable commodity; use of and reliance on ICT continue to increase. The programme of study encourages reflection on the growing use of technology and on its social, ethical and cultural implications for individuals and society. Among the issues addressed are sustainability, equality of access, security of personal information, copyright, plagiarism, and responsible and safe use of ICT.

ICT opens up a wealth of information to pupils and allows easy communication and collaboration with others across the globe. This encourages them to understand, respect, value and engage with not only their own cultures and traditions but also those of others and to develop a sense of their own place in the world.
