Religious education

Importance

Religious education provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. It develops children's knowledge and understanding of the nature of religion and belief including Christianity, principal religions, other religious traditions and world views.

RE is a statutory subject with a non-statutory programme of learning.

Programmes of learning

Programmes of learning set out the content of an area of learning – the knowledge, skills and understanding that children will learn. All programmes of learning share a common format, which helps schools with curriculum design and planning.
