Suffragan See of Richborough

The Queen has approved that the Reverend Canon Keith Newton BD AKC, Vicar of Knowle Holy Nativity and Priest-in-Charge of Easton All Hallows in the Diocese of Bristol, be appointed to the Suffragan See of Richborough in the Diocese of Canterbury in succession to the Right Reverend Edwin Ronald Barnes MA, on his resignation on 31 October 2001.

The Reverend Canon Keith Newton (aged 49) studied for his degree at King’s College London, for a Post Graduate Certificate of Education at Christchurch College Canterbury and completed training for his ordination at St Augustine’s College, Canterbury. He served his first curacy from 1975 to 1978 at Great Ilford St Mary, Chelmsford. From 1978 to 85 he was Team Vicar at St Matthew’s Wimbledon in the Wimbledon Team Ministry, Southwark. From 1985 he spent six years in Malawi first as Rector of Blantyre and then as Dean of Blantyre Cathedral. He returned to England in 1991 as Priest-in-Charge of Holy Nativity Knowle, Bristol, becoming Vicar of the same parish in 1993. In 1997 he also become Priest-in-Charge of All Hallows, Easton. He was Rural Dean of Brislington from 1995 to 1998 when he become Area Dean of the New Deanery of Bristol South.

He is married to Gill who is a teacher and they have a daughter Lucy aged 20 and two sons Tom aged 17 and James aged 14.
