Opportunities available NOW to support Board development for world class commissioning

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement commissions a number of programmes and activities that support Board development for world class commissioning. In addition to the opportunities listed here, other programmes are in development and will be launched in the coming months.

No single intervention can guarantee success in securing either a good result from the WCC assurance process in the short term or in delivering improved performance in the longer term, but the leading-edge development products commissioned by the NHS Institute for PCTs demonstrably improve Board performance through improved leadership. Effective Board leadership is a prerequisite for delivering WCC.

Opportunities currently available through the NHS Institute:

NHS Board Development Tool

This well proven tool challenges Boards to consider how they operate as a corporate entity and enhance Board effectiveness. Does the Board understand and deliver its core functions? Does it engage with stakeholders and proactively manage its reputation? Does it set strategy? Does it tackle “wicked issues”? This facilitated tool leads Boards to think laterally and externally, and provides a platform from which they can plan future action. It will not only support achievement of WCC Competencies 1-4, but also enables progress towards the other WCC competencies and demonstrates Boards’ commitment to improve where necessary. Executive Coaching

Research shows Executive Coaching is one of the most effective support mechanisms a senior leader in the NHS can access. If you haven’t taken up Executive Coaching in your current role and organisation, and are a PCT Chair, Chief Executive or Executive Director, we would be happy to offer you access for up to 4 Coaching sessions over the next year. Participants will have a one-to-one bespoke coaching relationship with one of the country’s most experienced coaches. Coaching is a powerful method of improving leadership across a range of competencies and can be an effective tool in enhancing clinical engagement at Board level. Non-Executive Director Development Programme

The NHS Institute is working closely with the Appointments Commission, Monitor, SHAs and other stakeholders to commission a compelling development programme for Non-Executive Directors (NEDs). The purpose is to ensure the benefits of NEDs’ diverse experience and knowledge are optimised to provide a universally high standard of NHS Board performance. The programme will be launched in Autumn 2008.

Politics in the NHS

The NHS Institute is revising its programme to develop Board members’ understanding of how the wider political system works and improve their political literacy and thinking. The objective is for Boards to be able to operate in a more politically astute way, identifying threats and opportunities at an earlier stage to better navigate the political landscape.

Team coaching

The NHS Institute is developing a Team Coaching programme for whole Boards and Executive teams. This powerful intervention will be commissioned from experienced coaches with specific skills in this specialised type of coaching.
