Suffragan See of Horsham

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Mark Crispin Rake Sowerby, BD, AKC, MA, Team Rector of St Wilfrid Harrogate, in the diocese of Ripon and Leeds, to the Suffragan See of Horsham, in the Diocese of Chichester, in succession to the Right Reverend Lindsay Goodall Urwin, MA, who resigned on the 28 February 2009.

Mark Sowerby (aged 45) studied first at Kings College London and Lancaster University, and he trained for the ordained ministry at the College of the Resurrection at Mirfield. He served his title in Knaresborough, in the diocese of Ripon from 1987 to 1990 and was curate at Darwen St Cuthbert’s with Tockholes in Blackburn diocese from 1990 to 1992.

From 1992 to 1997 he was Vicar of Accrington St Mary, Magdalen, in Blackburn diocese and Chaplain at St Christopher’s High School Accrington as well as Chaplain at The Victoria Hospital, Accrington. From 1993 to 1996 he was Assistant Director of Ordinands in the Blackburn diocese, before becoming Vocations Officer and Selection Secretary in The Ministry Division from 1997 to 2001. From 2001 to 2004 he was Vicar of St Wilfrid Harrogate, in the Ripon and Leeds diocese. Since 2004 he has been Team Rector of St Wilfrid Harrogate and from 2005 Assistant Director of Ordinands in the Ripon and Leeds diocese.

He is married to Ruth, who is an RS teacher, and they have three teenage daughters. His interests include cooking and opera - both classical and soap.
