Onboard and Loving It!

6 people rate this

We marched onboard HMS DARING and claimed her as our new home last Wednesday (10th Dec).  It was a brilliant, crystal clear, cold Glaswegian winter day and, with the exception of the General Alarm (that started sounding half way through my speech and finished as soon as the Ship’s Company had marched onboard!), the event was a great success.  Well done to bVT and UK Defence Industry for building such an excellent ship and, for the Ship’s Company, a warm welcome to the newest ship in the Navy.

Is It Xmas Yet??

7 people rate this

Hi everyone,

This is my first post so will be short and sweet. I am not really up to much at the moment as we are in our last week before we all go off for christmas leave. I am however expecting my little one to grace us with her presence any time in the next two weeks so it shall be a good christmas. Over the period i will make a couple of posts some of which will be about previous deployments but will hopefully give you a little insight into what i have been up to since leaving 824 Sqn. Anyway i look forward to giving you all an insight into the Aircrewmans world, enjoy!!

Moving Onboard - a Few Last Minute Hurdles

5 people rate this

In the Ship Control CentreThe Support Party arrivesFirefighting A little dip in confidence in our ability to move onboard. There was bound to be a ground rush as we approached the moment that the MOD accepts the Ship from the Shipbuilder and the Ship’s Company prepare to move onboard.  I have not been disappointed!!  The challenge is to ensure that we understand, in intense detail, everything about the Ship so that we can confidently operate safely  onboard.   Teleconferences, VTCs, scratching of heads and briefings abound as we wrestle with this issue.

My First Post…from Air Traffic Control at RNAS Culdrose

9 people rate this

This is going to be my first post from the Tower at RNAS Culdrose, so bear with me…..

I’ve been here almost two years now and as we speak I have jus come off a manic Approach/Director session! Approach is one of our radar positions primarily dealing with aircraft taking off and director deals with recoveries. Due to Culdrose being quiet I had both of these positions “bandboxed”.

In Glasgow….with Anticipation

As a mid 40, moderately low tech captain of a very high tech ship, the concept of a blog is fairly new to me.  Nevertheless, with 2 teenage daughters to encourage me, I thought it might be of interest if I provided a few thoughts on one of the most exciting projects in Defence at the moment.

Full Training Again, Nov 2008

7 people rate this

The weeks and (couple of) months after the Olympics have been the only time in 5 years when I have really had a chance to stop and think about what I’ve been doing all this time. The sacrifice, the friendships, the training, the racing, the failure and (thankfully more often) the success.  The thought of being better and faster than before is scary as I know what it is going to take to get there.

Royal Navy Supporting Me for 2012 Olympic Games

7 people rate this

Yesterday I has some fantastic news - I’m going to be allowed the time to campaign for 2012!  I’m absolutely over the moon as ever since I returned from China I have felt that there’s unfinished business regarding the Olympics.  Now I have the opportunity to rectify the mistakes I made this time round and to once again strive for perfection and hopefully bring a medal home.

Five Weeks to Go

9 people rate this

It does not seem very long since Daring came back from her final contractor sea trials. Since getting back alongside, the ship builder has been busy preparing Daring for her handover to The Royal Navy. Less than five weeks from now Daring will be flying the White Ensign and the ships company will be living on board.

Royal Navy Will Support Peter Reed for London Olympics 2012

6 people rate this

Yesterday morning on board HMS PRESIDENT, I was delighted to announce that the Royal Navy has offered to continue to sponsor me as an athlete until London 2012. With this support, it was an easy decision to continue to row for the next 4 years to aim for another gold medal at my home Olympics.
