470 Campaign Taking Shape

Austria fitness campMy campaign has been moving forward rapidly since my last post.  I can now officially announce that my crew for my new campaign will be Saskia Clark.  Saskia was one of my team mates at the Olympics last year where she finished 6th in the 470 class with her helm Christina Bassadone.  She is the ideal choice of crew due to her extensive experience in the class and her size and weight which perfectly complements me.  We both share the same passion for our goal and are really keen to get out on the water and start training together.  Unfortunately Saskia broke her collar bone just before Christmas fitness training on her mountain bike, and won’t be in the boat for another couple of weeks.  Keen to not let this affect our progress we have already worked hard to get our boat sorted and ready to race and have both been working hard on our fitness ready for the season ahead.  First up was a fitness camp in Austria with cross country skiing, snow shoeing and extensive gym work and rehab for Sas.  The camp was attended by a small group of sailors and was held at the British Olympic Association’s lodge in Lofer so we had the opportunity to mix with British skiers and Bobsledders as well as our own team mates.  cycling camp From Austria the fitness training moved to Palma for a cycle camp and some long days in the saddle.  I really enjoy my cycling and the routes in Palma can be fantastic with long hills and great views or flatter coastal routes to allow more level heart rate training.  I did most of my cycling with Bryony Shaw (Olympic Windsurfing Bronze Medalist) and we alternately dragged each other up and down hills depending on who was feeling strongest!  I’m now ready to get sailing and have a temporary crew to train with until Sas is fully recovered.  We intend to stay UK based for our initial training before moving out to Palma for a month in the build up to the first major regatta held there at the beginning of April.
