Rowing - Munich World Cup

8 people rate this

Last weekend was the first international regatta of the season. The last time we raced was 8 months ago at the World Championships, which coincidently shared the same venue.  It wasn’t a nice feeling going back to face the course of our 4th place defeat last year. We didn’t know how fast the opposition were, we were racing as the underdogs and we had a substitute with us.

Selected for Olympics!

10 people rate this

I was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2008 Olympic Games sailing in the Women’s Singlehanded Class the Laser Radial in Mar 08 following an extensive trials period.  Having worked so hard over the past 18 months I was delighted and relieved at the decision.  The trial process for my class had been extremely close between myself and my 3 rivals and despite all being really good friends, with only one place on offer, the competition has been fierce.  Having been training virtually none stop for 15 months to gain selection I have finally been able to have a short break and am now starting the build up towards the Games.

The next few months focuses on training in specific conditions in preparation for what is expected in China and includes some time sailing in the Olympic waters off Qingdao as well as competing at the European Championships in Jul.  The Games start on 8 Aug with racing commencing on 12 Aug and finishing on 19 Aug.

Will We Be Selected for the Olympics?

9 people rate this

The World Championships have just finished and I am once again left with mixed emotions.  My goal was to achieve a top ten finish and to be the top British boat in order to end the Olympic Selection Process.  I achieved my first goal by finishing a very pleasing 7th, however I was beaten by Andrea Brewster who managed to secure the Bronze Medal.

This is one of the unfortunate aspects of sport where you can only control how well you do and not how anyone else does.  Andrea sailed a superb regatta knowing she had nothing to lose having finished 4th Brit in Miami.  This obviously seriously complicates the decision for the Olympic selection committee and only a fool would try to pre-empt their decision!
