Young Officer Diary Week 7

This week has seen the Young Officers engaging with the Warfare Department aboard HMS Illustrious. The largest department on board the ship, Warfare is the fighting arm of the Senior Service, and this is reflected in the talks and activities we have been engaged in during the week.

Our initial talks were concerned with the administrational side to the department, and it was interesting to see how warfare takes on sole responsibility for the Ships Protection Organisation (SPO) aboard HMS Illustrious. This differs from smaller ships which have input manpower from other departments in order to augment its SPO, as well as Gangway staff and Upper deck sentries.

We have learnt a lot from the various Principle Warfare Officers and Chiefs on board, who have been able to show and explain, with reference to publications and example scenarios, how the ship fights in air, surface, sub-surface and electronic warfare environments.

Still in the pipeline the YOs are planning a Sports day and a Quiz night for the Illustrious crew, who will hopefully enjoy a good couple of night’s fun from these events. They can be difficult to work into the filled Ship’s program, but this is always a problem and so must be overcome.
