Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service (QVCS) Awarded to Commanding Officer 845 NAS

Lt Col Hussey MBE RM
Lt Col Hussey MBE RM

From December 2007 – April 2008, Lieutenant Colonel S J Hussey MBE Royal Marines was serving as the Officer Commanding Joint Helicopter Force (Iraq) during a spell of intense war fighting. Throughout this extremely demanding period, he demonstrated exemplary drive and absolute commitment to his demanding role.  He moulded a diverse range of personnel from all branches of the armed forces into a cohesive, highly efficient and disciplined joint fighting force that proved itself against an active and determined enemy.

Lt Col Hussey remained calm and focussed under considerable pressure, combining command of the Helicopter Force and direction of flying duties whilst at the same time refining the Division’s aviation requirements.  Utilising his previous experience in Iraq as the Commanding Officer of 847 NAS, he contributed greatly to the development and execution of vehicle interdiction tactics that bore considerable fruit in the reduction of improvised explosive devices against coalition convoys.   His fine leadership throughout a protracted period of intensive operations was in the finest traditions of the Royal Marines.

On his return from Iraq, Col Hussey was appointed Commanding Officer 845 Naval Air Squadron. He is currently deployed in Afghanistan with elements of his Squadron.  Commenting from Afghanistan on his award, he added, “It was an outstanding honour to have commanded the Joint Helicopter Force in Iraq and to be recognised in such a way is overwhelming and very humbling."
