Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Group to Visit Portsmouth

More than 4,800 United States Sailors from Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TR CSG), assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Europe, are scheduled to arrive in Portsmouth later this week to reinforce the strong friendships and close cooperation between the nations in addressing maritime issues.

The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) (TR) with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 embarked is scheduled to anchor off the coast of Portsmouth, England, on Apr. 4.  The guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) is scheduled to arrive pier-side in Portsmouth the same day.  In conjunction with this port visit, TR will host UK military and government officials for a distinguished visitor embark at sea, which will include an air power demonstration followed by a reception.

During the port visit, crewmembers will enjoy the culture and beauty of historic Portsmouth, participate in a variety of local events and activities, and tour surrounding areas.

Theodore Roosevelt and The Sullivans recently departed the 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR) after five months of combat operations.  During its deployment to 5th Fleet in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF), CVW-8 flew more than 3,100 missions into Afghanistan, providing vital close air support to coalition forces operating as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

During the same period, USS The Sullivans participated in the Standing NATO Maritime Group (SNMG) 2, which consisted of warships from Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.  The Sullivans was the Air Defense Commander on SNMG2's first-ever out-of-area deployment to the Arabian Gulf.  The Sullivans also operated in the 7th Fleet AOR to conduct Maritime Security Operations and Theater Security Cooperation with several Pacific countries.
 Both ships will to return to their homeports in April -- TR to Norfolk, Va., and The Sullivans to Mayport, Fla.  Public tours will not be available during the ships’ visit to Portsmouth.
