Commander Stuart Capes MA Royal Navy

Commander Capes was born in 1973 in Skegness.  Educated locally, he attended Skegness Grammar School before joining Britannia Royal Naval College in 1991.  On passing out of the college into the Royal Navy in 1993 he served as the Navigating Officer of HMS Blackwater in Northern Ireland.  Transferring to the Submarine Service in 1995 he subsequently served in both Trafalgar and Vanguard class submarines in the period to 2002.  Thereafter he was privileged to be given Command of HMS Dulverton, again serving in Northern Ireland.

Selection for the Submarine Command Course ‘Perisher’ followed and successful completion saw him appointed as the Executive Officer of the submarine HMS Sceptre.  After a busy two years which included deployments to both the East coast of the USA and into the Indian Ocean, he moved to work within the capability area of the Fleet Headquarters.  In 2007, he was selected for the Advanced Command and Staff Course where he was awarded a MA in Defence Studies from Kings College London.  Promotion to Commander followed in 2008 and he took up Command of HMS Vanguard later that year.

Commander Capes is married, blessed with two young children and enjoys spending as much time with his family as the Royal Navy allows.  When he does find any other spare time he can be found either on the Golf Course, trying to improve his handicap, or the river bank attempting to coax an unsuspecting trout from its lie.
