Legal Advice Officer

Free confidential legal advice is available from a fully qualified civilian solicitor and is available to all Service personnel and their families.

The Legal Advice Officer (LAO) will try to deal with all legal matters and queries. In the event that he does not have the requisite knowledge on a particular subject, he will refer the matter on, wherever possible, to a civilian solicitor who will be prepared to provide a free initial consultation.

The LAO will not give matrimonial advice to civilian spouses of Service personnel. In matrimonial cases, where both spouses are Serving Personnel, the LAO can only advise on a 'first come' basis. With the consent of both spouses, he will consider giving both spouses general procedural advice only, in a joint interview, before advising both to seek individual advice as to their respective positions.

A consultation with the LAO does not create a Solicitor / Client relationship.
