I'm MOVING away - How can I find a new Doctor and Dentist?

In the UK...
The Service Families Task Force has detailed information and a checklist of all the documents you will need to hand when planning your healthcare move. You will also find additional information on waiting list transfers and special equipment needs.

Doctors
The quickest way to find out your nearest Doctor (GP Doctor) is to look at NHS Online here (Be ready with your new POSTCODE):

website Web site: NHS Online

All GP practices publish booklets that will tell you about how the practise operates (how many doctors, practice nurses, etc) and what out of hours emergency cover it provides.

If you are moving to a military base of any sort (Army, Navy or Airforce) your local HIVE will have all these details.

Remember NHS Direct offers free advice about personal health day and night. The NHS Direct nurses give callers advice on caring for themselves at home or put them in touch with the right services if they need more help.

Dentists
Finding a dentist can be a problem throughout the UK, as there are currently about 4,000 vacancies for the job! The government is trying to sort this out.

Once you have registered you will need to visit your dentist at least once every 15 months to keep on their list. If you cannot get registered with a dentist NHS Direct will arrange for you to:

  • receive emergency dental treatment (in A&E)
  • receive urgent treatment (within 24 hours) to relieve pain and subsequently be offered treatment for dental problems identified at examination) or
  • have an oral examination followed by a course of treatment for identified dental problems (routine treatment, within 8 weeks and 10 miles of patients home).
