Local Area
The main entrance to RAF Wittering is on the A1 about 3 miles south of Stamford and 88 miles North of London. The station is just within the County of Cambridgeshire. The boundaries with Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire are within 3 miles of the Station.

The nearest town to the Station is Stamford, which is probably England’s best stone town and is worth a visit for its architectural and historical interest. It offers a good range of shopping and a market is held in the town centre on a Friday. Nearby, the Cathedral City of Peterborough offers more extensive shopping facilities in modern precincts. The city lies on the main London (Kings Cross) railway line and has been growing rapidly in population over the last 15 to 20 years. Market Day is Wednesday and late night shopping in Peterborough is Thursday.

A little further a field, Leicester, Nottingham and Cambridge offer good shopping facilities as well as other attractions, while London itself is just under an hour by rail from Peterborough.

Limited local bus services run from Wittering village to Stamford and Peterborough.

History of the Station
RAF Wittering dates back to 1916 when Wittering aerodrome was established on Wittering Heath as the home of No 1 training Depot.

RAF Wittering is home to The Harrier Operational Conversion Unit/No 20 (Reserve) Sqn, 37 Sqn RAF Regiment, 5131 (BD) Sqn, and well as personnel from the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU).
