The Movements Officer is assisted by the Assistant Movements Officer and both work for the Queens Harbour Master (QHM) who is responsible for the safe control and operation of the port including the safe navigation of all ships and craft. Harbour berthing and movements are co-ordinated by the Movements team within the Dockyard Port of Plymouth such that QHM can execute his task of protecting the port. In practise the Movements team plans and co-ordinates movements across the port to ensure a co-ordinated and risk addressed programme for the port and they are also responsible for the appropriate allocation of MOD berths within the Naval Base as made available by QHM. Each day the team compiles and produces the Daily Movements signal which is then distributed to all ships, alongside and at sea in the Plymouth areas, as well as personnel within the Naval Base and the local media for inclusion in newspapers like 'The Western Morning News' and 'The Evening Herald'.
The Movement Signal covers military and ferry moves but commercial moves are unavailable at the time of production. Details of these movements can be obtained from Longroom Port Control on 01752 836490 or VHF Channel 13 or 14.
