Naval Personal and Family Service and Royal Marines Welfare

"To support the Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their families in peacetime and war by helping prevent or reduce the effects of personal difficulties, especially those which arise as a result of Service life, in order to optimise the military capability of the Serviceman or woman."



Being there for you
A Naval family has to cope with more pressures than most in civilian life. Separation from a spouse or partner for one, military action and danger for another. Naval Personal and Family Service and Royal Marines Welfare are on hand to help Service personnel and their families if needed.

NPFS and RM Welfare staff are encouraged to be as informal and helpful as possible and all concerns are handled in strict confidence.

What can you expect from NPFS & RM Welfare?

  • A totally confidential service (within the law).
  • Help with the effects of the stress of Naval life on service people and their families by working with all involved (including the Command, supporting agencies, medical services and Chaplaincy) to meet the RN/RM's requirements for an efficient and effective service.
  • Delivery of a timely, high quality, service without discrimination.
  • A comprehensive assessment of need.
  • A full social work service to serving men and women and their families.
  • A professional service to the Executive and Divisional System.
  • A link between the service person and their family in times of difficulty.

This is not all. A quick call to one of the NPFS & RMW offices will soon tell if they can help. If they can't, they are usually able to get information and access to another local or civilian source of support. There is a lot of professional, confidential, help around.


Naval Personal and Family Service
The purpose of NPFS is to support the Royal Navy, its personnel and their families in peacetime and war by helping prevent or reduce the effects of personal difficulties especially those which arise as a result of Service life.

NPFS offers directly, or with other agencies advice, counselling support (practical and emotional) and advocacy (contacting officials) on behalf of clients. These services are available to serving individuals, couples or families.

NPFS staff may be service or civilian, male or female and from a variety of specialisations including social work, counselling, community development and youth development. An understanding of the complexities of service life and its effects are central to the understanding and ethos of the agency.


I need to call - which NPFS area do I live in?
Naval Personal and Family Service are located in the three main port areas together with sub offices in Northwood, Rosyth, Yeovilton and Culdrose (plus overseas) as shown on this map. Cards called 'Naval Next of Kin Information' lists phone numbers for NPFS Offices.

Where YOU live (if you are Next of Kin) decides which NPFS office can help you. If you are still not sure, call any one and they will tell you!

Out of working hours, urgent enquiries are normally dealt with by the Officer of the Watch / Duty Naval Base Officer of the main shore establishment who will pass information to the Duty NPFS Staff member to action as necessary.

  • Bereavement.
  • Debt Advice.
  • Child Care concerns.
  • Mental Health.
  • Special Needs.
  • NOK Support for Deployed Personnel.
  • Physical illness.
  • Pregnancy complications.

Royal Marines Welfare
RMW tries to prevent or reduce the effects of personal difficulties, especially those which come as a result of Service life. RMW will respond in a sensitive manner to any request for help and offer support and advice to enable people to resolve matters.

RMW provides a confidential service, without discrimination, in a timely and appropriate manner.

RMW staff are made up of male and female staff who are either service or civilian trained in a wide variety of subjects. The majority have substantial experience of service life and the type of problems that can occur.

Where?
Royal Marines Welfare has offices at every main Royal Marines establishment. These are open weekdays (see link below for details). Each unit has 1 or 2 workers based in a Welfare Office, which deals with that Unit's personnel and their families. There is also an out of hours system for emergencies. The guardroom of each unit will be able to call the duty Welfare worker should you need urgent help.
