    Name: Ben Carr
    Age: 22

What kind of hours do you do?

I came on at 8.00am today to cook lunch and dinner and make preparations for tomorrow's breakfast for all the duty watch. Tonight we're serving curry or gammon steaks. All the training I've had will help me get where I want to be - which is looking after my own pub or restaurant. It's a stepping stone to where I want to go.

What would you say are the qualities a Chef needs?

To be a Chef in the Royal Navy all you need is the ability to learn, enthusiasm and not be shy of a bit of hard work. Having a bit of life experience really helps; it's good if you've spent time with different types of people. You share everyone else's living space and you've got to be able to accept other people's differences to make the whole thing work. You need an open mind.

    What did your family think?

Even now, they're really proud. My dad was in the Royal Navy. I'm from Manchester, which some people think is more of an Army place, so that makes it even better. People are more interested in what I do since I've joined.
