As part of a long term strategy to demonstrate that MOD estates are being managed effectively and efficiently, and with due regard for environmental considerations, Mr. Tom Marlow, the Range and Countryside Manager of the Royal Naval Air Station at Yeovilton, in Somerset, has undertaken a series of guided walks around some of Air Station's real estate.

On 12th June 2004, Tom escorted members of the Somerset Wildlife Trust on a guided walk around Merryfield Airfield. This walk was primarily to view the orchids and other uncommon flora to be found at Merryfield. The group were able to admire the Southern Marsh Orchids (Dactylorhiza praetermissa) and Broad Leaved Marsh Orchids (Dactylorhiza majalis).

A similar walk at Merryfield was carried out on 16th May, to hear the Nightingales singing, and a further walk took place on 15th June for Parishioners from the local villages of Isle Abbots and Isle Brewers.
