824 Naval Air Squadron

The commissioning of 824 Naval Air Squadron on 2 June 2000 at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, equipped with Merlin HM Mk 1 aircraft, continues a long and illustrious history for the Squadron however this will be the first time the Squadron has operated in the training role.

824 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) trains Pilots, Observers, Aircrewmen and Engineers on the Merlin Mk1 helicopter. To achieve this the squadron has eight Merlin Mk 1 helicopters as well as a variety of flight and maintenance simulators. The squadron complement includes both service and civilian staff at RNAS Culdrose.

The Merlin is a new generation, all weather day/night operational multi-mission helicopter. The Pilots, Observers and Aircrewmen work together as a crew during the 44 week course covering all aspects of Merlin operations. Having successfully completed the course, they are awarded 'Wings', and sent to front line squadrons.
