814 Naval Air Squadron

814 Squadron is tasked to serve in any global theatre of conflict and tension, from the sea or based ashore.

Based at Culdrose in Cornwall, 814 was designated as the first United Kingdom Squadron to be equipped with Merlin HM 1 Maritime Patrol Helicopter. The Squadron was officially re-activated on the 5th October 2001. 814 was first formed in 1938 with twelve Swordfish on board HMS Hermes, and war service included protection for convoys around South Africa, in Dakar and in the Far East. Since then it has operated many different types of fixed-wing aircraft, before being disbanded in 1959, recommissioning in 1960 with Whirlwind helicopters, to be followed in 1961 by the Wessex and in 1973 by the Sea King. Although the Squadron has changed aircraft type many times, 814 retains its reputation as a “Flying Tigers” Squadron, ready to serve anywhere at anytime.

The Squadrons motto is, “in hoc signo vinces” – “in this sign you will conquer”
