Navy Days 2009

A Flying Fox officer has joined the planning team on a Full Time Reserve Service contract in Devonport, Plymouth.

Lt Richard Gobey joined the team in December 2008 as the Operations Officer and has since absorbed himself into the challenge of lining up an action packed and fun filled day for visitors to the dockyard.

As well as this challenge Lt Gobey has been able to enjoy life in a Royal Naval mess as a permanent “liver in” living and working alongside his regular counterparts. As a Submarine Controller in the RNR Lt Gobey has also taken advantage of Devonport being a submarine base to visit submarines and learn from current submariners about life at sea.

“This job is an excellent way for me to further both my civilian and RNR careers. I have developed a broader skill base as well as honing those I already had. Living in a working naval base is also an eye opening and broadening experience. Being able to consult serving submariners enables me to learn more about the ‘customer’ for when I return to submarine controlling.”

Navy Days 2009 takes place at Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, Western Europe’s largest Naval Base, over the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September 2009. The theme will be ‘Present and Future Capabilities’. The event will feature Royal Navy warships open to the public, a river display involving a dramatic hostage rescue and flying and static aircraft displays.
