    Job description

You safeguard the lives of pilots and other aircrew and passengers in aircraft, and help make sure that the highly skilled professionals in your team continue to fly essential missions - whether they are flying to prevent attack, to a rescue, or to get emergency supplies to where they are needed.

We offer most people the security of a Full Career, which is 18 years or to age 40, whichever is later. Some people may have the opportunity to serve for longer, depending on their wishes and the needs of the Service. However, if you want to leave the Royal Navy, you can submit 12 months' notice two and a half years after the end end of your initial professional training. The exact length of this training period depends on the particular job you do and the level of training it requires. All new recruits have a right of discharge at 14 days notice after 4 weeks, within the first 6 months of service, regardless of career terms.

    On board

    Name: Richard Joslyn
    Age: 37

    What was basic training like?

A lot of people imagine Raleigh as just like 'boot camp'. They don't realise it's getting you ready for professional training.

So, do you get to see the world?

You may work half days, or have a weekend off when you're alongside in another country - they try to give everyone time to look around.

    What is your main role?

Currently, I work on the immersion suits that helicopter crews need to stay alive if they go into water below 15 degrees. As a team, we work on all the survival kit, so there's more variety.
