Dame Yve Buckland - Chair of the board
Dame Yve Buckland was appointed Chair of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement from its inception on 1 July 2005. Prior to this appointment she was Chair of the Health Development Agency (DoH 2000-2005) following her Chairmanship at the Health Education Authority since 1997. Yve was, until 2005, Vice-Chair of the South Warwickshire Primary Care Trust and was Programme Director of the University of Warwick Health Service Partnership at the Institute of Governance and Public Management at the Warwick Business School.
Yve is an Honorary Member of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Governance and Public Management (IGPM), Warwick Business School, University of Warwick and also a Fellow of the RSA. She was awarded the DBE in HM Birthday Honours List June 2003 for services to Public Health. Yve is also currently Chair of the National Consumer Council for Water.
Professor Dame Carol Black - Non-Executive Director
Dame Carol is the National Director for Health and Work, Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Chair of the Nuffield Trust. She joined the Board as a Non-Executive Director for a 4 year term on 15 February 2006. She acts as an ambassador with key medical groups on behalf of the NHS Institute.
Professor Tony Butterworth CBE - Non-Executive Director

Michael Collier CBE - Non-Executive Director
Michael is now a part time management consultant. He is a Non-Executive Director for the North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire Strategic Health Authority, and the Yorkshire and North East Regional Committee of the National Trust. Michael retired from being Chief Executive of ONE North East, the Regional Development Agency for the North East, in 2003. His major consultancy assignments are related, in the main, to education and skills. He is also an adviser to a major civil engineering company.
Mike Deegan CBE - Non-Executive Director
Mike is Chief Executive of Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is currently a member of the National Leadership Network and chairs its programme of work on local hospitals. Throughout 2003/04 he chaired the Modernisation Agency Steering Group on behalf of the National Modernisation Board. Prior to his current appointment, he was Chief Executive of North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust and led the merger of Warrington and Halton Hospitals.
Noorzaman Rashid - Non-Executive Director
Noorzaman Rashid joined the NHS Institute Board as a Non-executive Director on 1st October 2007 for a four-year period. He works for Harvey Nash, a global professional services, IT and Recruitment business where he leads the Government, public sector and leadership services practices.
Noorzaman brings significant board level experience to the NHS Institute from across the public and private sectors. He has a deep understanding of the talent issues market and organisational transformation. His international consulting experience includes work in Russia, South Africa and Japan. Noorzaman is also a board member of the University of Middlesex, The British Edutrust Foundation and is Chair of the Public Services Management Network.
He has a background in government, having worked for the Local Government between 1988 and 1998, for the City of Bradford Council and Coventry City Council.
Professor Bernard Crump - Chief Executive Officer
Paul Allen - Director of Leadership Development
Paul Allen is Director, Leadership Development at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. Paul and his team are responsible for senior executive development, and for building leadership capacity in the NHS via graduate schemes, programmes for aspiring black and minority ethnic leaders and mid career entrants from other sectors. Prior to joining the NHS Institute last year, Paul spent the last 16 years in industry helping global organisations such as Sony, Reckitt & Colman and Diageo to transform and build leadership and change capability through a series of mergers, acquisitions and integrations. His early career was spent in education as a senior lecturer in the further education sector.
Dr Helen Bevan OBE - Director of Service Transformation
Over the past 15 years Helen has led change initiatives at local and national level which have created improvements for millions of patients. Her current role is to keep NHS improvement knowledge fresh, relevant, impactful at the leading edge. She holds a first degree in social science, an MBA and a doctorate from Henley Management College.
Michael Cawley - Director of Finance and Business Services (On Secondment to E.Midlands SHA)
Michael has worked at senior management and director level in NHS Finance for the past eleven years. He has wide experience at NHS Trust, Health Authority, Strategic Health Authority and Primary Care Trust level. Prior to this, he worked in the private sector practice, for what is now known as PriceWaterhouseCoopers, serving both private and public sector clients.
Julian Denney - Chief Planning Officer
Julian joined the NHS Institute in November 2005 with executive team responsibility for business planning and strategy, research and evaluation, marketing and communications, and IT and knowledge management, as well as working across all Directorates to ensure a ‘joined up’ approach.
Simone Jordan BA, MBA, MCIPD, FRSA

Simone has held a variety of senior roles in both public and private sector organisations and in academia. She has also run her own successful consultancy practice working on complex assignments in the
Anita McCallum - Chief Marketing Officer
Educated to degree level, her background is in psychology and specialisms are in marketing and communications. An experienced facilitator and trainer, she is also a tutor/assessor for the Chartered Management Institute and lectures part-time at Executive Diploma level. She is married with one child and, for fun, she teaches Jazzercise to adults in East Anglia.
Joseph Liddane - Non-Executive Director
Joseph Liddane, a trained chartered accountant, brings over 30 years experience in financial advisory and management consultancy roles to the post and is currently Managing Director of Setanta Performance, a performance improvement company. He also has experience of the NHS in his role as Chair of the Whittington Hospital Trust.
