Welcome to the LSIS website

Roger McClure, Chief Executive, LSIS

I am delighted to tell you that on 1 October 2008 the businesses of the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL) and the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA) transferred to Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), the new sector-led organisation.

As I am sure you know, bringing these two organisations together is a key part of the government’s learning and skills strategy. Of course, there will be a period of continuity and transition, and until further notice you should continue to deal with your CEL and QIA contacts – the only difference is that they are now representatives of LSIS.

We will use this interim site to keep you updated with news and developments. The existing CEL and QIA websites will continue to provide you with information about programmes and activities, and I am happy to confirm again that we are committed to providing these programmes and honouring existing contracts until the end of July 2009, at least.

The creation of LSIS marks a new beginning for the community of providers in the learning and skills sector – colleges, private training providers, local authority adult education services and providers in the voluntary sector. The government has shown its willingness to trust this community to provide a universally excellent service to the nation, raising the skills and prosperity of its people whoever they are and whatever their background. It is now for providers to meet this challenge, through self-improvement, self-regulation and working with the full range of partners: it is LSIS’s job to help them do it.

Being sector-led means that we will work closely with our new board and council in the coming months to shape the new organisation. We will also engage as widely as possible with providers and partners to discuss how we can best work together to achieve a truly excellent and equitable provision of learning and skills in England.

This autumn, we have a busy schedule of meetings, events and conferences, where we will be talking about LSIS. I hope to have the opportunity of meeting many of you soon.

Best wishes

Roger McClure
