[edit] Background

The written report of the Cabinet Committee on the authenticity of the letter held on 4 November 1924 is in CAB 27/254. This suggests that the Foreign Office had a copy of the letter on file but nothing in the way of an "original". See the Foreign Office memoranda at CAB 24/168 (pages 4-24).

The verbal report to the Cabinet from the Committee on the Zinoviev Letter held on 17 November 1924 is recorded in the Cabinet Committees of 19 November 1924, CAB 23/49, (60)(24).

For observations on the condition of the Foreign Office file on the subject see the Preface to Documents on British Foreign Policy, Series IA, volume I, xiii.

Additional information on the origin of the letter may be traced in now piece KV 2/501 formerly PF PP 200 reviewed and preserved for future scrutiny by MI 5 section R8 G E Wakefield 1959 May 5 from bigram | digraph indicator SZ reports raised by The Director of Intelligence, Scotland House and Blue Jacket signals intercept reports from the GC&CS| GC & CS| G.C.& C.S.| Government Code & Cypher School
