Strategically important subjects: modern foreign languages (MFL)

Both HEFCE's and the HE sector's support for languages in higher education is longstanding and wide ranging:

  • In September 2006 we announced a £4.5 million programme to encourage the take-up of language courses in England, called Routes into Languages.
  • We also support languages in higher education via other HEFCE initiatives.
  • In 2005 we conducted an evaluation of two of our initiatives to support minority languages.
  • In the HE sector, universities and colleges are undertaking projects to raise aspiration and demand among young people for language study.

We have worked with the DfES, HESA, Universities UK and CILT to agree a common dataset to better understand the health of MFL.
