Learning and teaching evaluation framework

From autumn 2006 we have adopted a learning and teaching evaluation framework to inform the evaluation of our policies and programmes. The framework comprises a set of principles of good practice that we will use to improve the design and implementation of both our in-house and commissioned evaluations. It can be downloaded below.

External review

As part of policy development in our learning and teaching directorate, we evaluate the consequences and impact of our various initiatives and programmes in learning and teaching. Some evaluations are undertaken by HEFCE staff and others are commissioned from external consultants and academic/research organisations. To help us consider and improve our approach, we commissioned an external review of our work on research and evaluation in learning and teaching in 2004.

The review recommended that we adopt a more rigorous and evidence-based approach to our evaluations so that we:

  • learn more from them
  • disseminate this learning more actively and widely across the sector
  • draw on it more actively to inform our future policy work.

Our learning and teaching evaluation framework above takes these recommendations into account.
