MADE UP is the INTERNATIONAL exhibition for LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL 08 and is also presented at the Bluecoat, FACT, and Open Eye Gallery as well as at several non-gallery sites in the city centre.

MADE UP celebrates the power of imagination. The invited artists are passionate, hold deeply felt positions, give us something unexpected – create something new. They all use desire to move us from our habitual experience into a new space where there are new possibilities, including the potential for subjective creativity.

The curatorial team each took an individual approach to the theme and their different concerns can be seen in each of the four galleries (and non-gallery spaces) of the exhibition. We invite your imaginative participation and hope you enjoy MADE UP as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

Lewis Biggs, Artistic Director, MADE UP

At Tate commissioned artworks ‘make up’ new places – staging posts that exist somewhere on the journey between the real and the unreal, documentary and make believe, fact and fiction, truth and lie, original and reconfiguration.

‘Between the real’ is the starting point for the commissions, which encompass a broad range of practices across painting, sculpture, installation, video and drawing, and are rooted in disparate levels of actuality – history, memory, conflict, art, myth and fable.  Using strategies of appropriation and transformation, the artists distort, embellish and rebuild until the familiar nature of our reality is radically displaced.

A selection of recent work has also been made to create a Drawing Room – a space to test further some of the very factors that prompt our understanding of the world and leave us unsure. What is actuality? What is fantasy? And can one exist without the other?
