The Project

The structure carrying the A66 Dual carriageway over the River Tees has been replaced by a new wider 3-lane structure, which accommodates the slip roads to and from the new South Stockton Link Road.

The £14.3M contract was awarded to Edmund Nuttall Ltd on 13 February 2006.

Why the bridge needed replacing

The old bridge did not meet all the engineering standards required to take the latest 40 tonne heavy goods vehicles. Studies had also shown that there were problems with the concrete bridge supports below the water line and with ground conditions on the east embankment. If left this could have become serious in the longer term.

What has happened so far?

Work started on 20 March 2006 and was completely open to vehicular traffic on the 3rd December 2007.

Work to construct the new cycleway and the footpath network under the bridge was completed on 22 January 2008.  The bridge was formally opened on the 23 January 2008.
